NEW DELHI: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday conducted a raid at the residence of Trinamool Congress leader Mahua Moitra. The estranged leader was under the lens of central agencies after she was accused of taking money and gifts from businessman and friend Darshan Hiranandani in exchange for asking questions in the parliament. The raid came after the CBI registered an FIR in this regard.
The anti-corruption body, Lokpal had earlier ordered a comprehensive CBI investigation against Mahua on these allegations. The report is to be submitted within six months. The Lokpal observed that the allegations are very serious and there should be a thorough investigation. Lokpal also ordered for the entire matter in the document to be recorded for careful evaluation.
The CBI has also been asked to submit a report on the status of the investigation every month. Based on the ethics committee report, Mahua was expelled by presenting a resolution in the Lok Sabha on December 8 following the cash for query allegation. However, Mahua has denied all allegations levelled against her.
