Money honey trap; Police urges caution with unknown calls and social media requests

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala Police have issued a warning to citizens regarding the increasing cases of honey traps. The warning emphasizes the involvement of criminal gangs behind phone calls from unknown numbers and friend requests from strangers on social media.

Warning by Kerala police

We can fall into the honeytrap without realizing it. Video calls from unknown numbers or unknown persons can sometimes compromise our phones. Therefore, it's important to be cautious when receiving such calls.

Furthermore, callers may display nudity and capture screenshots or recordings, which are then used for blackmailing victims for money. These calls are often made after thorough analysis of social media contacts, and the blackmailers may send compromising images to victims' friends and relatives to create pressure for payment.

The solution is simple: avoid answering video calls from strangers. In the event of being scammed, reporting the incident within one hour (golden hour) to 1930 increases the chance of recovering the money.
