CHENNAI: Election Commission’s flying squad seized crores of liquid money from Chennai on Saturday. The incident took place last night at Chennai Tambaram railway station. A total of Rs four crores have been sized. In the incident, four people including BJP workers were arrested.
The money kept in six bags was seized from the AC compartment of the Nellai Express train, going from Chennai to Tirunelveli. After receiving a tip-off about the bags inside the train, the flying squad conducted an investigation and seized the money. It is rumoured that one of the arrested has implicated BJP MLA Nainar Nagendran in the incident, as he said it was under the command of Nagendran that the money reached Tamil Nadu. However, no official confirmation has been made about Nagendran’s involvement.
The Lok Sabha elections will be held in Tamil Nadu on April 19 and the campaigning will end on April 17th at 5 pm. Minding the last lap of campaigning, the election commission has already adopted their vigilant side, fearing more cash inflow across the state. According to EC norms, carrying more than Rs 50,000 without sufficient documents is illegal, and can invite imprisonment. This is done to impede the dirty money laundering business that pops up in the wake of elections. EC’s flying squad have now made it a routine to check vehicles including that of political leaders.
