'Molested more than 150 times'; SC quashes rape case against Malayali youth

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Wednesday used the unique power (section- 142) to quash the molestation case filed against a Malayali youth by his ex-girlfriend. The case was based on a complaint filed by a woman against a native of Kannur.

The Supreme Court was forced into this decision after the young woman informed the court about her recent marriage and her decision to end the case. The complainant and the Malayali youngster were in a relationship during their engineering course in Chennai (2006-2010). The woman alleged that she was molested more than 150 times during this period.

The two continued their relationship even after ending their course. By this time, the man was placed in Bengaluru while the woman found work in Chennai. In a major twist, the man ended the relationship after he said yes to another marriage proposal. With this, the woman complained to the Tamil Nadu police.

The man was summoned to the police station, where he promised in front of the officer that he would marry the complainant. Even his family obliged to this. Things never went smoothly, as the family soon backed out from the promise forcing the police to proceed with the case. Meanwhile, the young man who got a job and went to Dubai was arrested by the police after issuing a red corner notice.

Albeit the woman expressed her decision to stop the case, the madras high court went ahead with the procedures, considering the seriousness involved. At this juncture, the young man approached the Supreme Court for respite.
