BENGALURU: Authorities had to close a shop in Davanagere Karnataka after a boy fell sick after consuming the infamous ‘smoke biscuits’. The shop owner's license was also cancelled following the drastic incident.

In a now-viral video, a boy in green t-shirt is offered a smoke biscuit in a cup by the shopkeeper. In his excitement, the boy gulped down the mixture and soon realized the awful situation he jumped into. Caught in a panic, smoke started emanating from his mouth and nose which was reacted with a chuckle by the person shooting the video. However, the boy soon gestured discomfort and let out a scream, beckoning to his stomach. The seriousness of the situation was ascertained and he was provided with water but soon enough the boy went into dizziness.

It was only after careful research that the ‘smoke biscuits’ myth got unearthed. These are not any fancy delectable but a dangerous concoction of liquid nitrogen. Direct ingestion can cause severe burns to the mouth, throat, esophagus, and stomach. They can reach temperatures as low as -196 degrees Celsius, causing serious health problems. Liquid nitrogen can also cause skin allergies, mouth burns, abdominal pain, and irritable bowel syndrome.

Many people confuse liquid nitrogen with dry ice. Both of these are harmful to the human body. Although they are used as freezing agents in food preparation and eating, they should not be eaten directly or applied to the body.
