NEW DELHI: With the controversy surrounding Covishield still lingering in media circles, another report has emerged revealing possible side effects with Covaxin, India's first indigenous COVID-19 vaccine developed by Bharat Biotech. The discovery was made in a study conducted by a team of researchers at the Banaras Hindu University. According to the study, one-third of people who received Covaxin, manufactured by Bharat Biotech, experienced side effects.

In the one-year study conducted on 926 people who received Covaxin, side effects were found in about one-third. The study was published in the German-based journal Springer Inc. Almost 505 of the people subjected to the study have developed respiratory tracts. Heart attacks, nerve damage and skin diseases have also been reported. The study also looked at the long-term side effects of Covaxin in adolescents and adults.

Menstrual disorders, hypothyroidism, paralysis, and Guillain-Barre syndrome have also been reported in people who took the vaccine. Guillain-Barré syndrome is a disease that causes weakness of the nerves in the limbs. The study was conducted from January 2022 to August 2023. The study shows that side effects were more common in those with co-morbidities and for the more legitimate numbers, further in-depth studies are needed.
