THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Health Minister Veena George said that a neuro intervention system has been set up under the neurology department in the medical college. For the first time in government medical colleges in the country, a neuro intervention system has been set up under the department of neurology.
Neuro Intervention is a technique used to diagnose and treat diseases of major blood vessels in the brain, spine, and neck. It is a treatment option that can be used instead of surgery. The medical college also serves as a training center for neuro intervention. As part of this, a two-year neuro intervention fellowship program is also conducted. The minister also stated that it will be possible to create expert doctors through this.
The Comprehensive Stroke Center of the Medical College is equipped with systems including mechanical thrombectomy to remove clotted blood when major blood vessels are blocked due to stroke. Mechanical thrombectomy to remove a block in a large blood vessel to the brain should be done within 24 hours.
This can bring the body back to life with as little chance of exhaustion and death as possible. With the introduction of neuro intervention system, Thiruvananthapuram Medical College has completely transformed into a comprehensive stroke center. During this period, the neurology department also set up a system to take CT angiograms of the brain of patients who are critically ill due to stroke.
A 12-bed ICU has been established to provide intensive care to patients who have undergone blood-dissolving thrombolysis and mechanical thrombectomy, the treatment of stroke. There is also a mechanism to perform decompressive craniectomy with the help of a neurosurgeon if there is excessive swelling in the brain during intensive care. The medical college also has a facility to perform endarterectomy with the help of a vascular surgeon if the stroke is due to a blockage in the blood vessels in the neck.
A comprehensive stroke center has been set up in the medical college integrating advanced systems such as neuro intervention, decompressive craniectomy, endarterectomy and intensive care.
