Ali Khan did not die from collapse of middle berth; railways with explanation

MALAPPURAM: Railways with an explanation on the incident of the death of a Malayali passenger due to the collapse of the middle berth during train journey. Ali Khan (62), a native of Ponnani Maranchery, died. Ali Khan was travelling to New Delhi on the lower berth when the middle berth collapsed at Warangal, Telangana. The accident happened on Tuesday. Ali died while undergoing treatment and his body was brought home.

Ali Khan was lying on the lower berth when the accident took place. The middle berth broke and hit Ali Khan's neck, breaking three bones and damaging a nerve. The limbs became paralyzed. The railway authorities immediately admitted him to a hospital in Warangal. From there he was shifted to King's Multi Specialty Hospital in Hyderabad for expert treatment. He was operated on on Friday but died on Monday.

Railways has now come forward with an explanation for Ali Khan's death. Railways said that the accident was not due to the collapse of the berth but because the passenger in the middle berth did not attach the chain properly. The accident occurred in the S6 coach of Ernakulam - H Nizamuddin Superfast Express (Train No. 12645). Ali was allotted seat number 57 (lower berth) in this compartment.
