Foreign Medical Graduates Examination must be made transparent: Parents submit petition to central government

KOCHI: With cheating found in the NEET exam as well, parents want the Foreign MBBS Eligibility Test (FMGE) to be made transparent. A petition has been submitted to the central government for this.

At present, the answer key is not published. There is no opportunity to re-evaluate, to know the marks obtained, or to complain about the result. Those who qualify MBBS abroad must pass FMGE to get registration in India. The examination is conducted by National Board of Examination in Medical Science (NBEMS) in the months of June and December.

The petitions were submitted under the leadership of the Foreign Medical Graduates Parents Association and All Kerala Ukraine Medical Students and Parents Association.

Limited success only

The maximum success rate in FMGE is 22 percent and it was 16.65 percent in 2023. Students say that even though it is an undergraduate-level exam, the questions asked are of postgraduate level. The requirement is to pass FMGE within 10 years of admission abroad.

Students Vs Kerala Medical Council

A complaint has been raised that the Kerala State Medical Council is not accepting the National Medical Commission (NMC)'s recommendation that only one year of internship is enough for those who studied foreign MBBS online during the COVID period. The students said that in the online interview, the council asked those who applied for registration to do an internship of more than one year counting the time they stayed in the country during the Covid period.
