Silver Line hanging in balance, K-Rail with other mission

krail-

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With the Silver Line project hanging in the balance without central approval, K-Rail Corporation has taken up other work including consultancy and flyover construction. K-Rail is a joint venture between the railways and the state for railway development. 572.5 crore contract to upgrade Thiruvananthapuram Central and Varkala railway stations to international standard, along with the construction of 27 flyovers to eliminate level crossings, has been awarded to K-Rail.

K-Rail is the consultant for the Wayanad Airstrip project as well as the works carried out by KSRTC with KIIFB funds. K-Rail is also in charge of making projects for Thalassery-Mysore, Angamali-Erumeli Sabari rail and Nilambur-Nanchankode railway.

Karnataka is opposing the Thalassery-Mysore route citing environmental issues and has not sanctioned the survey on the Karnataka side of the Nilambur-Nanchankode route. Of the 200 km route, 68.5 km is through the National Park and 11.5 km is through the Bandipur Tiger Sanctuary. K-Rail has made a new design, avoiding this. The plan is for the Nilambur-Nanchankode and Thalassery-Mysore routes to converge at Kalpatta and reach Karnataka via an underground tunnel through the forest. The government has entrusted K-Rail with the task of getting permission from Karnataka to conduct the survey as well. K-Rail has also expressed willingness to undertake the construction of the Sabari rail route.

K-Rail undertakes development projects in association with Rail Vikas Nigam Limited. The consortium has been awarded the Rs 156.47 crore contract for an automatic block signalling system on the Ernakulam South-Vallathol Nagar rail route. Block signalling is coming for the first time in Kerala. With signals coming every kilometre, trains can move one after the other. The work should be completed within 750 days.
