DUBAI: A long cherished dream of Malayalis will soon become reality after the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation granted the operating license to 'Air Kerala' a Kerala-based airline. The airline is run by a group of expatriate entrepreneurs. The new venture is spearheaded by Dubai-based company Setfly Aviation. The company is planning to start operations in 2025. In the first phase, domestic services will begin with three flights.
When the company reaches their target of 20 aircraft, the plan is to start services to foreign countries, including in the Middle East region. A website for 'Air Kerala' was inaugurated last year. Initially, the service will connect Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities using three ATR 72-600 aircraft. Aviation experts from Kerala will also be considered for the institute.
The company has nominated people for key posts including the CEO. Officials said related announcements will be made at an appropriate time. This is seen as the biggest recognition for the Malayali community. 'Air Kerala' has many special features like being the first airline to be based in Kerala and the airline to be started by non-residents.
