Housewife dies as scooter collides with lorry in Kovalam

KOVALAM: A housewife met with a tragic end after a lorry hit the scooter on which she was riding pillion near Kovalam in Thiruvananthapuram on Saturday afternoon. The deceased has been identified as Beena, wife of Poonthura native Ajayan. Ajayan, who sustained serious injuries on his legs, has been admitted to the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital.

The accident took place at around 2.30 pm on Saturday when the couple were travelling from the Kovalam region to Kazhakkootam. According to sources, the couple were waiting for the signal at the Vazhamuttom bypass junction when a lorry, approaching from the left side, hit the scooter's handle. Beena fell on the road and the rear wheel of the lorry ran over her. Ajayan sustained a serious injury in his right leg.

The body was taken to the Medical College Hospital in an ambulance of the National Highway Authority. The driver of the lorry, Isaki Selvam (24) of Thoothukudi Krishnarajapuram, and cleaner Mahesh (30) were taken into custody by the Thiruvallam police. Following the accident, traffic was disrupted at Vazhamuttom for a long time.
