Rs 10,000 fine for littering; one lakh if garbage is dumped in water bodies; Minister MB Rajesh inaugurates "Anti-Littering Week"

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: There will be no more warning for dumping garbage in the state. Instead, severe punishment will be ensured. This is according to the new scheme implemented by the Sanitation Mission and the LSG department. To kick off this, Minister MB Rajesh inaugurated the "Anti-Littering Week" on New Year's Day.

Mayor Arya Rajendran, Health Standing Committee Chairperson Gayatri Babu, Nava Kerala Mission Coordinator Dr TN Seema, LSG Department Special Secretary TV Anupama, Sanitation Mission Executive Director UV Jose, Kerala Solid Waste Management Project Director Divya S Iyer and Sanitation Mission Directors Ganga RS, Kavita S, Neetulal B, Corporation Secretary S Jahangir and others were present at the function held at Palayam Saphalyam Complex. The minister also inaugurated the newly installed bins at the camp.

What should be done

Garbage, no matter how big or small, should be put in bins or taken home and handed over to Haritha Karmasena workers.

10000 rupees fine

• A fine of up to Rs 10,000 will be levied for throwing any waste material in public places.
• Throwing garbage in water bodies will lead to a fine of up to one lakh rupees and imprisonment.

Take photos, earn money

The public also has an opportunity to find illegal litterers. Members of the public can send photos or videos of littering in public places and water bodies to WhatsApp number 9446 700 800. The informer will get 25% of the fine.
