NEW DELHI: CPM state committee member and Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas has voiced his support for Shashi Tharoor's remarks praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Brittas emphasized that left-wing parties had previously argued that India should not succumb to pressure from Western nations. He also suggested that Tharoor should be praising the left parties for their stance. Additionally, Brittas lauded Modi's decision to import oil from Russia despite Western opposition, calling it a commendable move. He described Shashi Tharoor as a valuable leader of the Congress party.
Shashi Tharoor praised Narendra Modi during the Raisina Dialogue in Delhi. He said that the policy adopted by Narendra Modi during the Russia-Ukraine war was correct. Tharoor also praised Modi's ability to maintain good relations with both countries. He also admitted that he had previously opposed India's stance but realized his mistake.
Shashi Tharoor's words:
"In a parliamentary discussion in February 2022, I had criticized the stance India had adopted. My criticism was based on violations of the UN Charter, violations of the principle of borders, and violations of Ukraine's sovereignty, all of which should be condemned when any country violates them."
"However, after three years, I realized my stance was wrong. The policy shows that we now have an Indian Prime Minister who can embrace both the President of Ukraine and the President of Russia within a two-week span and gain acceptance from both sides. India is now in a position to work towards permanent peace, something very few countries can achieve."
