NEW DELHI: A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court by Elston Estate, seeking higher compensation for the land being acquired by the state government for the Wayanad rehabilitation township project. The petition requests that the land acquisition process be halted until full compensation is granted.

Elston Estate approached the Supreme Court after the Kerala High Court upheld the government's decision to acquire the land. The petition also seeks a stay on the High Court's order. The government had initiated proceedings to acquire 78.73 hectares of land belonging to the estate.

Elston Estate argues that the compensation of Rs 26.56 crore assessed by the government is inadequate and is demanding Rs 1,063 crore instead. The state government has also filed a counter-petition, requesting that no decision be made without hearing their side.
