NEW DELHI: The police stopped the opposition MPs' march to the Election Commission headquarters. The opposition was trying to cross the barricade. A scuffle broke out between the opposition and the police. The MPs were detained including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka. The opposition is protesting alleging irregularities in the voters list.
The opposition has canceled the meeting with the election commissioners. The opposition demanded that all MPs be allowed to meet the commissioners. However, protests also erupted over the authorities' suggestion that only thirty people be allowed. Meanwhile, MP Mahua Moitra developed uneasiness. The MPs said that she should be hospitalized.
Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, among others, have been detained. Priyanka protested by holding up the Constitution. Rahul Gandhi said that this is a struggle to protect the Constitution. He added that this is not a political struggle, but a struggle to protect the Constitution.
The protestors held up placards with the slogan 'Vote theft' in languages including Malayalam in the march to the commission headquarters, which is a kilometer away from the Parliament premises. Shashi Tharoor responded that the credibility of the Election Commission should not be undermined.
Rahul Gandhi had yesterday alleged that over one lakh votes were rigged in the last Lok Sabha elections in the Mahadevapura Assembly constituency in Karnataka. The Karnataka Chief Electoral Officer had denied the allegations and had asked Rahul Gandhi to produce evidence.
