THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: India will introduce a new Aadhaar card format from December 1. The updated card will display only the photo and QR code. Personal details such as name, address, and the 12-digit Aadhaar number will be removed from the visible area. These details will be stored securely inside the QR code and can be accessed only when required. The new Aadhaar will be completely digital.
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) will begin the process on December 1. A mobile app for downloading the new Aadhaar will also be launched on the same day. People will be given enough time to shift to the new card before it becomes mandatory. Guidelines will be issued later. The current Aadhaar card can be used until the new system is fully implemented. After that, the old card will become invalid. The change aims to prevent Aadhaar misuse, fake cards, and fraud.
Photocopies of the new Aadhaar will not be allowed. The Aadhaar number can still be written in application forms, but personal details can be seen only by scanning the QR code. Users will be able to share only the information needed for a specific purpose—for example, just a name and photo—while keeping other details hidden. The app will also allow users to track when and where their Aadhaar is used.
How to download the new Aadhaar
1. From December 1, search for the app named “Aadhaar” on Google Play Store (Android) or Apple App Store (iPhone) and download it. Then enter your Aadhaar number.
2. Verify the details using the OTP sent to your registered mobile number. You also have to scan your face for authentication. After setting a six-digit PIN, you can start using the new Aadhaar. No one will be able to take screenshots or print the digital card.
Up to 5 Aadhaar cards per phone
One mobile phone can manage Aadhaar cards for up to five family members through the app. For this, all Aadhaar numbers must be registered with the same mobile number. This will help family members who do not have a smartphone to access their Aadhaar through the app.
