KOCHI: Intelligence agencies have started investigating the ‘Who is Mr. D’ posters that appeared in the heart of Kochi city. Graffiti posters asking the question ‘Who is Mr. D’ with a sketch of an unknown person were put up on Ernakulam M.G. Road and other important places in the city when the businessman’s revelations that Mr. D had smuggled the Panchaloha idols from Sabarimala started coming out. Intelligence agencies are assessing that this is not a coincidence. Kerala Kaumudi had published news about the poster on December 23.
Since the antiquities trade is widespread in Kochi, it is believed that gangs with information related to idol smuggling are behind the posters. There are also indications that there is fierce competition between gangs in Kochi regarding the smuggling of antiquities.
The image in the poster was checked against the data of criminals in the possession of intelligence agencies. It was also compared with cartoon-style images in the intelligence collection, but no one who resembled the image was found. Investigations are ongoing into the circumstances leading to the poster being put up.
The allegation of smuggling of Panchaloha idols came after the gold plate smuggling in Sabarimala. The allegation was made by Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala. Chennithala handed over the matter to the state police chief and registered a case after an expatriate businessman informed that a man named Mr. D was involved in the idol smuggling as an intermediary. The SIT did not initially reveal who Mr. D was.
