BHOPAL: A six-month-old baby boy is among those who died after drinking water contaminated with toilet waste. The incident took place in Bhagirathpura in Madhya Pradesh's Indore district. The deceased was Avyan, the son of Sunil Sahu, an employee of a private courier company. Avyan was the child born ten years after his sister's birth.
Avyan's mother is unable to produce breast milk. Therefore, as per the doctor's instructions, she prepared the baby's milk by boiling a little tap water with formula milk. However, the family was unaware that the tap water had been contaminated with toilet waste.
The baby, who was completely healthy, had sought treatment at the hospital after developing high fever and diarrhea. Despite being given medicines prescribed by the doctor, his health deteriorated on Sunday. He died on Monday morning.
40 deaths have been reported so far in Bhagirathpur after toilet waste mixed with drinking water. More than 100 people are currently undergoing treatment. The condition of many is critical. Toilet waste was being discharged over the pipeline supplying drinking water in Bhagirathpur without any safety measures. Cracks in several parts of the pipe supplying drinking water led to sewage mixing with it.
Municipal Corporation Commissioner Dilip Kumar said that the crisis is being investigated and disciplinary action has been taken against the officials concerned. Following the incident, the water supply assistant engineer, sub-engineer and zonal officer have been suspended.
