SHIMLA: Police registered a case of ragging and sexual assault against three students and a teacher in the death of a graduate student. The incident took place in Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh. The student had recorded a video on her phone describing the abuse she faced. The police registered a case based on this footage.
The victim was a second-year undergraduate student of a government college in Dharamsala. As per the complaint from the victim’s father, on September 18, his daughter was brutally harassed by students Harshita, Akriti and Komalika in the pretext of ragging. Ashok Kumar, a professor at the college, also misbehaved with the student, leaving her mentally distraught. Subsequently, the student's health condition deteriorated.
She then sought treatment at various hospitals. The student died on December 26 while undergoing treatment at DMC Hospital in Ludhiana. The student's family said they delayed filing the complaint as none could come to terms with the shocking death. The family decided to take matters to the police after they saw the video testimony of the victim opening up about the abuse she faced.
Meanwhile, the college authorities allege that the student failed the first-year exam and was attempting to get admission in the second year.
