NEW DELHI: Those who opt out of piped natural gas (PNG) connections will no longer be able to get LPG. This is in view of the shortage of cooking gas cylinders (LPG) following the Middle East conflict. The Petroleum Ministry ordered that the supply of LPG to those who do not switch to natural gas connections in areas where it is available will be stopped within three months.

LPG connections will also be cancelled in housing societies that refuse permission to lay pipes. A concession will be given if the oil company submits a report stating that there is a technical obstacle to piped gas in those areas.

The Petroleum Ministry also started steps to provide more piped gas connections. Instructions have been given to speed up the work of laying pipes. Applications for PNG should be processed quickly, and connections should be provided within three days. It has been decided to unify connection rates and avoid additional rates. The Petroleum Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) is responsible for supervision.

By promoting direct piped gas to homes, LPG cylinders can be distributed to those in need. This is expected to prevent waiting, panic booking, black marketing and hoarding. Hotels and other commercial cylinder users have also been asked to switch to piped gas.
