CHANDIGARH: Senior leader Navjot Singh Sidhu on Tuesday resigned as the chief of the Punjab Unit of the Congress.
"The collapse of a man's character stems from the compromise corner, I can never compromise on Punjab's future and the agenda for the welfare of Punjab. Therefore, I hereby resign as the President of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee. Will continue to serve the Congress," Sidhu said in his letter after resigning.
Sidhu was appointed as the President of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) on July 23.
This came just before former Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh visited the national capital.
The tussle in Punjab Congress escalated in August, the party's central leadership has sought to bury the hatchet by appointing Navjot Singh Sidhu as the Congress chief apparently against the desire of the Chief Minister.
Amarinder Singh is visiting Delhi amid speculation about his future course of action, days after he quit as the Punjab chief minister.
It is his first visit to the national capital after he resigned on September 18.
Some media reports claimed he may meet some BJP leaders in Delhi after which Amarinder Singh's media adviser Raveen Thukral sought to clarify the reason for his visit.
Thukral said he was on a personal visit to the national capital.
"Too much being read into @capt_amarinder''s visit to Delhi. He's on a personal visit, during which he'll meet some friends and also vacate Kapurthala house for the new CM. No need for any unnecessary speculation," tweeted Thukral.
Later, at the Chandigarh airport, Amarinder said, "I have to go for some work which I am going for. I have to hand over the Kapurthala House."
He said the media was "unnecessarily indulging in speculation".
Just before the arrival of Amarinder Singh at the airport, Congress president Sonia Gandhi and party leader Rahul Gandhi also reached the airport after returning from Himachal Pradesh.
They were on their way to the national capital.
Amarinder Singh had resigned amid a bitter power tussle with party leader Navjot Singh Sidhu.
