lift-bridge

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The damaged path towards the Karikkakom Temple will soon be replaced by a lift bridge. The lift bridge across Parvathy Puthanar is being constructed as part of the National Waterway Development Project. Such a bridge is constructed across the river to facilitate the smooth movement of boats as the National Waterway becomes a reality. The 4.5 metre wide bridge has a total cost of Rs 2.18 crores. The bridge, whose construction began in January 2022, is expected to be completed by August. The construction work has been taken up by Kerala Electrical and Allied Engineering Company (KEL), a public sector undertaking, under the Department of Inland Navigation. There will be an operating room and a 100 KV digital generator set adjacent to the bridge.

What is a lift bridge?

A lift bridge is a type of movable bridge in which a span rises vertically while remaining parallel with the deck. The lift bridge mechanism enables to elevate a part of the horizontal interior lift span with the help of counterweights and cables in order to facilitate water transport under the bridge. India’s first vertical lift bridge is located in Rameswaram.
