KOCHI: Rear Admiral KM Bimal, a native of Thiruvananthapuram, has taken charge as the Director General of the Warship Design Bureau at the Naval Headquarters in New Delhi. With this, he became the first head of the Warship Design Bureau, which designs naval vessels, including submarines.
A native of Vattavila in Poojappura, KM Bimal completed his B.Tech from Cochin University of Science and Technology. He joined the Navy in 1986 as a sub-lieutenant. He graduated in 1990 with a scholarship from the Army.
An expert in the design of submarines, he has worked on warships, at Visakhapatnam and Mumbai dockyards and at the Army Headquarters in New Delhi.
The Directorate of Naval Design, which designed the aircraft carrier including the Vikrant, was converted into the Warship Design Bureau.
Bimal studied at Vidyadhiraja School and Arts College, Thiruvananthapuram. Wife: Preethi. Daughter: Deekshitha.
