Stray puppies can be sterilized and given for adoption; Rosy is guarantee for such a project

TRISSUR: This is Rosy, a living example of the effectiveness of the project, Early Neutering in Dogs (END), which moots for sterilizing stray puppies and giving them up for adoption. This can prevent the over population of stray dogs.

Rosy should have grown as a stray dog in the streets but she is now 12 years and living happily at the Kokkala Veterinary Hospital. If she was left to live as a stray dog without sterilization, she would have given birth to many generations of stray dogs.

The Dean of the Pookode Veterinary Hospital, Dr. MK Narayanan says that if the END project goes hand-in-hand with the existing Animal Birth Control (ABC) project, then the uncontrolled birth of stray dogs can be prevented in five years. As the dogs are sterilized when they are puppies, the surgery and care is effective and the expense is low.

Dr. MK Narayanan began END in 2009 on the lines of how western countries neuter puppies and give them up for adoption. He used to sterilize puppies within the age of 8 to 12 weeks and gave them for adoption to those who needed pets. Around 50 puppies were given to pet lovers. However, the government was reluctant to take up END project.

The project began at Kokkala Veterinary Hospital and many dogs were sterilized and given to pet lovers. However, one remained at the hospital. She grew up in the premises of the hospital itself. The employees of the hospital gave her food and named her Rosy. At night, she stays with the watchman and by morning she can be seen on the front of the hospital. However, Rosy is frightened of the sound of crackers during Trissur Pooram and can be seen hiding with its tail rolled under.
