Rishi Sunak was selected when his challenger Penny Mordaunt withdrew after failing to get the support of 100 MPs. Sunak is becoming the prime minister at the age of 42. He has the support of more than half of the 357 Conservative party MPs.
Rishi Sunak's ancestors have their roots in Punjab. Sunak was born in Southampton to Yashvir Sunak, a National Health Service general practitioner, and Usha Sunak, a pharmacist. His wife is Akshata Murthy, daughter of Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy and Sudha Murthy. The couple have two daughters Krishna and Anoushka.
