BALI: UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has given the nod to approve 3000 visas for young professionals from India to work in the UK every year. The announcement comes hours after his meeting with PM Narendra Modi at the G20 summit.
This is a new scheme announced after the signing of the UK-India Migration and Mobility Partnership last year. The British government has stated that India is the first country to benefit from such a scheme.
"Today the UK-India Young Professionals Scheme was confirmed, offering 3,000 places to 18-30-year-old degree-educated Indian nationals to come to the UK to live and work for up to two years," the UK Prime Minister's Office said in a tweet.
A quarter of international students in the UK are from India. Figures show that Indian investment in the UK supports 95,000 jobs in the country.
The UK-India Migration and Mobility Partnership (MMP) was formed to ensure better cooperation between the two countries in regard to migration. The agreement also aims to use the skills and vast market of Indian professionals in Britain's economy.
Modi met Rishi Sunak, who recently took over as British Prime Minister, after meeting US President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron before the start of the summit. The prime minister's office released the picture of the two prime ministers having a conversation during the G20 summit.
