DHARAMSHALA: Punjab Kings pacer Arshdeep Singh has landed in controversy after a video of his interaction with fellow Indian cricketer Tilak Varma went viral on social media. The video, which also features Naman Dhir of the Mumbai Indians, has sparked criticism online, with several users accusing Arshdeep of making insensitive remarks about Tilak Varma’s skin colour.
In the video, Tilak Varma is seen walking past while Arshdeep Singh is seated alongside Naman Dhir. Arshdeep is heard calling out to Tilak using the phrase “oye andhere,” which roughly translates to “hey darkness.” He then appears to joke about Tilak’s complexion and tells him to apply sunscreen. Arshdeep later points towards Naman Dhir and says, “This is Punjab’s real noor, and then look at you.”
The clip quickly spread across social media platforms, drawing sharp reactions from many users. Several people criticised the comments, calling them inappropriate and racially insensitive.
One social media user wrote, “The pain and discomfort on Tilak’s face said it all. He was visibly hurt and not impressed at all. This wasn’t banter, it was pure racial shade.”
The incident has sparked a wider discussion online about colour-based remarks and casual racism in sports and public spaces. Neither Arshdeep Singh nor Tilak Varma has officially responded to the controversy so far.
Arshdeep Singh looked straight at Tilak Varma and said:
