NEW DELHI: Women's safety in the national capital Delhi was put into question yet again following another 'Nirbhaya'-style gang rape. A 30-year-old housewife, mother of three children, was brutally assaulted on a moving bus. The incident took place in Delhi's Pitampura area on Tuesday morning. The conductor and driver of the private bus were arrested.

The woman was walking home after working at a factory. The sleeper bus was parked near the Saraswati Vihar B-Block bus stop. The man standing near the door approached the woman on the pretext of asking the time. He suddenly grabbed her and dragged her into the bus. She was gang-raped while the bus travelled across the city. The driver and conductor took turns raping her. Later, they abandoned her on the road and fled. The woman called the police station and informed the horrific ordeal. She was then taken to a hospital.

DCP Vikram Singh said that the driver Ramender and conductor Umesh were arrested within four hours. Both have been remanded in judicial custody. The bus, with Bihar registration, was taken into custody. The forensic team collected evidence. The CCTV footage is being examined to trace the route taken by the bus.

The accused stated that the woman voluntarily boarded the bus after agreeing to have sex for Rs 3,000. The police are investigating the matter. The driver paid Rs 1,500. The conductor refused to pay. After an argument, she was thrown off the bus. The police are also investigating whether there is any truth in the allegations made by the two.

The Nirbhaya incident that shook the country was on December 16, 2012. A 23-year-old paramedical student was gang-raped by six men in a moving bus. She died on December 29 at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore. On March 20, 2020, the four convicts were hanged in Tihar Jail.
