KOLKATA: Calcutta High Court was alerted by the amicus curiae about inmates becoming pregnant in West Bengal jails. The amicus curiae, presenting a case in court, revealed startling facts: "Prisoners are getting pregnant and giving birth inside jails. In Bengal's various prisons, there were 196 births reported."
During a recent prison visit, the amicus curiae witnessed fifteen pregnant women prisoners residing with their children. Concerned, the amicus curiae urged for a ban on male staff entering female prisoners' cells. The police, acknowledging the situation, stated, "Female prisoners can raise their children in prison until they turn six. However, it is unclear if pregnancies occur within the prison walls. Any such incidents will be thoroughly investigated."
