KOZHIKODE: Four jail officials were injured in a clash between inmates in the district jail in Kozhikode. The inmates who were on trial in a murder case got embroiled in the ruckus. Deputy prison officers Pratish, Jeremias and Assistant Prison Officers Dileesh and Saneesh were injured. All are undergoing treatment at a hospital.

The Kasaba police registered a case against the prisoners Muhammad Ajmal (30) and Shafiq (32) on the complaint of the Deputy Prison Officer. The incident took place in the new block of the district jail on Sunday morning. Ajmal and Shafiq were shifted from the new block to the lower cell by the jail authorities the previous day of the incident.

The change in cell irked the two and they blamed another convict in remand for being behind the move. It came to a confrontation. Both of them attacked Saneesh who intervened. Then Jail Superintendent Baiju KV summoned them to his office on Monday. During interrogation, they again became violent and attacked the prison staff. The assailants were subdued after much effort by the prison staff.

Both of them have been under trial in the district jail for almost two and a half years. Following the incident, Shafiq was shifted to Thavanur Jail. Jail Superintendent Baiju KV informed that Muhammad Ajmal will be transferred to Kannur Jail the next day.
