THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Civil Supplies Department in Kerala has decided to take action against gas agencies that fail to supply commercial LPG to beneficiaries, despite easing restrictions.

This comes after complaints that agencies are not providing the required quantity of LPG. With the supply situation improving, authorities had directed 100% supply to essential sectors and 62% to 66% supply to industrial sectors such as hotels and restaurants. However, these levels are reportedly not being met.

Civil Supplies Commissioner K Hima said that officials will investigate the complaints, and legal action will be taken if violations are found.

Strict action will be taken if agencies divert LPG meant for one category to another after billing, or if they charge more than the approved price. Cases will be filed under the Essential Commodities Act and LPG Control Orders. Authorities may also recommend cancellation of licenses based on oil companies’ disciplinary guidelines.

So far, 6,158 inspections have been carried out across gas agencies, restaurants, and the open market in the state. Officials have seized 70 domestic LPG cylinders and 137 commercial cylinders. A special squad may be formed at the state level if needed.
