ALAPPUZHA: If estranged CPM leader G Sudhakaran decides to contest as an independent in the Ambalappuzha constituency, the CPM will respond by fielding VA Arunkumar, son of late CPM veteran VS Achuthanandan. The government received an intelligence report stating that Sudhakaran is likely to contest and that his candidacy will pose a serious challenge to the party.
If Sudhakaran becomes an independent and is supported by the UDF, the CPM stands the chance of losing the seat. CPM assessed that Sudhakaran, a taskmaster with a corruption-free popular image, will have to be put against a leader who can influence the voters emotionally. The discussions are progressing in such a way that if VS's son is fielded in the veteran leader’s hometown, it won't be that difficult for him to generate an emotional connection with people.
Arunkumar said that he would abide by the party's decision, as speculations had previously arisen regarding his candidacy in the Malampuzha constituency. Meanwhile, flyers with the picture of sitting MLA H Salam as part of the campaign in the Ambalappuzha constituency have been prepared.
