CHOTTANIKKARA: The Mulanthuruthy Fire force team stepped up to help a stray dog with paralyzed hind legs after it was hit by a vehicle. The fire station staff, ready to assist anyone in need, built a special device to help the dog walk again.
The dog arrived at the Mulanthuruthy Thuppumpady fire station about a week ago. It was weak despite being given food and water by the officers. They alerted animal lovers, but no one came forward to help. The dog's efforts to crawl on the road caused its skin to peel off. Moved by its condition, employees K.B. Prashanth, Akhil Kumar, and R. Rajesh decided to find a solution to help it walk.
While specially designed devices for dogs with back problems exist abroad, they're not available locally and can be quite expensive. The team decided to take matters into their own hands. Using PVC pipes and wheels, and guided by a YouTube model, they created a simple and affordable device. Once fitted, the dog quickly started walking and even became a ‘self-appointed guard of the fire station’. The team has since been taking care of it under the leadership of Fire Officer Ismail Khan.
K.B. Prashanth, who has experience as a mechanic at the KSRTC workshop, played a key role in designing the device. The contraption allows the dog to not only walk but also sit comfortably.
