From soap to salt, books at huge discounts and spacious food court; roadside fair turns a hit in capital city

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The roadside fair held at Kanakakunnu under the leadership of Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation is attracting public attention to discover new possibilities of roadside shops. The fair will end on August 21st. Street vendors, Kudumbashree groups and various organizations are participating in the fair. 120 small and big stalls have been set up as part of the fair. The objective of the fair is to promote street vendors in a positive manner and empower street vendors.

This fair has brought under one roof the street vendors found in busy areas of the city. Soap, comb, mirror, from salt to camphor are available at cheap prices in the fair. Home appliances, show pieces, bags, jewellery, shoes, clothes, pickles, bamboo-jute-husk-coir products and many other items are available in the fair. The fair also has a used book stall where reading enthusiasts can buy books at low cost.


A spacious food court has also been set up under the leadership of the street vendors union (CITU) and Kudumbashree for those at the fair to enjoy and eat. In connection with the fair, a loan mela of street vendors, distribution of ID cards, seminars, workshops etc are also held here.
