THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Health Department has issued an advisory urging caution amid intense heat in the state. People are advised to avoid direct exposure to sunlight between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Extra care should be taken by children, the elderly, pregnant women, and those with serious illnesses.
Even if you don’t feel thirsty, it is important to drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration caused by excessive fluid loss. Dehydration, sunburn, and heatstroke can occur not only from direct sunlight but also indoors. For children, the elderly, and patients, precautions should be taken even inside the house.
To maintain hydration, it is recommended to drink salt water, buttermilk, lemon water, and other fluids. Ensure proper ventilation indoors. Animals and birds can also suffer from heatstroke, so provide them with sufficient water. Avoid consuming excessive sugary drinks and carbonated beverages.
Seek medical attention if you experience symptoms such as sunburn, fatigue, dizziness, headache, nausea and vomiting, unusual sweating, extreme thirst, decreased urine output, dark-colored urine, rapid heartbeat, or loss of consciousness.
