THRISSUR: The onset of summer rains following a period of extreme heat has led to tragic lightning incidents in two districts. In Chengannur, a 23-year-old youth lost his life, while in Venginissery, four children sustained injuries during separate outdoor sporting activities.

The deceased has been identified as P.A. Asif, son of P.M. Ashraf and Sunitha, residing in Mulakuzha. The accident occurred around 6:00 PM at the Metropolitan School Ground near Puthencavu St. Mary’s Cathedral while Asif was playing football with friends. Although he was rushed to a private hospital in Malakkara immediately after being struck, he could not be saved. Asif, who was employed in Dubai, had returned home just two weeks ago and was scheduled to fly back on May 15. His funeral will be held at the Mulakuzha Muslim Jama'at Cemetery.

In a separate incident at Venginissery, four children were struck by lightning while playing cricket at the Kappakkattu field around 5:30 PM. The injured include Jishnu (15), Sadu (12), Shivakrishna (14), and Akshara (13). They suffered burns on their hands and thighs. One of the children, Shivakrishna, collapsed unconscious after lightning reportedly struck his waist ornament. Local residents quickly transported them to a hospital, where authorities confirmed that all four children are now out of danger.
