THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Minister Ganesh Kumar has introduced a new reform to apprehend and penalize KSRTC employees who consume alcohol while on duty. A crucial aspect of this reform is the mandatory implementation of breathalyzer tests for drivers to prevent drunk driving.
Before commencing their duties, drivers must undergo a breathalyzer test. This decision stems from numerous complaints indicating that many KSRTC drivers report to work while under the influence of alcohol.
Research findings indicate that this new measure will likely lead to a reduction in accidents. Additionally, it is observed that alcohol consumption during duty is a primary cause of misconduct towards passengers. Therefore, the breathalyzer test requirement will apply to both drivers and conductors.
Following the morning test, there will be squad checks to ensure that no alcohol is consumed during duty hours. Any violation of this rule will result in a new form of punishment. The revised penalty involves five days of unpaid work instead of the previously practiced transfer or suspension. These days of duty will not be counted towards the employee's service under any circumstances.
Furthermore, officers at depots will also be subjected to breathalyzer tests.
Minister KB Ganesh Kumar emphasized that the majority of KSRTC employees are dedicated workers, but the actions of a few tarnish the reputation of the entire workforce. The minister cautioned employees against making calls while
on duty.
