THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: As the summer heat sets in across Kerala, electricity consumption is beginning to soar, often leading to a spike in monthly utility bills. However, staying cool doesn't have to mean breaking the bank. By planning your energy use and adopting a few smart habits, you can keep your home comfortable while helping the state avoid crises in energy availability and distribution.

Smart habits for a cooler summer

The Energy Management Center (EMC) recommends simple, proactive steps to ensure your energy consumption stays within a reasonable limit. Here is how you can make a difference:

1. Master the peak hours

Energy demand hits its highest point in the evening. To avoid putting unnecessary strain on the state’s energy distribution, avoid using high-power electrical appliances between 6:00 PM and 11:00 PM. This includes:

  • Induction cookers
  • Iron boxes
  • Motor pumps
  • Washing machines

As a golden rule: always turn off electrical appliances immediately once you are done using them.

2. Optimize Your Cooling

Air conditioners are often the primary driver of excessive summer bills. You can maintain a pleasant environment while being energy-conscious by following these practices:

  • Set the Temperature Wisely: Aim for a setting above 25 degrees. This maintains comfort while significantly reducing the load on your appliance.
  • Choose Efficiency: When shopping for new appliances, always prioritise those with a high BEE star label. They are designed to deliver performance while using less power.

3. Make the Switch to Modern Essentials

Small upgrades can lead to substantial long-term savings:

  • Switch to BLDC Fans: Replacing a standard fan (55 watts) with an energy-efficient BLDC fan (28 watts) can save you approximately 6.48 units of electricity every month.
  • Prioritize LED Lighting: Ensure your home is equipped with LED bulbs and tubes, which are far more efficient than older lighting alternatives.

"If people understand and take action about electricity consumption, they can reduce their electricity bills and save the state from facing an electricity crisis." — Dr. R. Harikumar, Director, EMC

By making these mindful adjustments, you’re not just reducing your personal electricity bill—you’re playing a vital role in protecting Kerala’s energy availability for everyone. Stay cool, stay smart!
