CHENNAI: The nation bid a tearful adieu to the versatile singer Vani Jairam, who passed away yesterday. She was laid to rest with full official honours at the Basant Nagar Crematorium in Chennai. Many including notable dignitaries paid homage to the departed soul.

The singer conferred with the third-highest civilian honour, Padma Bhushan last week, was found dead at her house in Nungambakkam, Chennai, Saturday morning. She was staying alone in the house after her husband’s death. When the singer’s domestic help came for work at 11 am on Saturday, the door was locked. As the singer did not respond to the calling bell, the maid alerted the neighbours and relatives. They then informed the police. When the police broke opened the door and got inside, she was found lying on the floor. There were injuries on her forehead. She may have sustained the injuries after hitting on the teapoy which was besides her bed. By the time she was taken to the hospital, she was declared dead. Her body was brought home late last night after the post-mortem.
