THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A POCSO court sentenced 66-year-old Sundaresan Nair, a native of Keraladityapuram, to seven years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 25,000 for sexually abusing a student studying in class III. If the fine is not paid, the convict will have to undergo additional imprisonment of six months.

The girl lived with her grandfather and grandmother. On the morning of January 2, 2014, the girl's grandfather was rushed to the hospital due to severe chest pain. During this time, the girl had to stay at the house of the convict. The convict also helped to take the grandfather to the hospital. He abused the child after returning from the hospital. Fearing the person, the girl did not tell anyone about this ordeal. The girl came to know that she was abused during an awareness program against child abuse in the school. Following this, the child suffered from mental issues and struggled in academics. The incident came to the fore during a counseling session and a case was filed. Special Public Prosecutor RS Vijay Mohan appeared for the girl.
