Three imprisoned in case of pelting stones at Oommen Chandy, 110 acquitted

KANNUR: The court imprisoned three accused in the case of attacking and pelting stones at Oommen Chandy, when he was the chief minister. Deepak, the 88th accused in the case, was sentenced to three years in prison and a fine of Rs 25,000. The court sentenced the 18th accused C O T Naseer and the 99th accused Biju Parampath to two years in prison and a fine of Rs 10,000. After a five-year long trial, the Kannur Sessions Court found the three guilty in the case.

The case is that on October 27, 2013, when Oommen Chandy was the chief minister, there was a conspiracy to kill him and tried to kill him with deadly weapons by creating a roadblock from Caltex to the Police Club in Kannur. The group attacked the chief minister's vehicle and the accompanying police vehicles with stones and wooden sticks. Iron rods were thrown at the vehicle. Oommen Chandy, Congress leaders K C Joseph and T Siddique were also injured in the stone pelting of the group shouting slogans. According to the charge sheet in the case, there was a loss of Rs 5 lakh due to the vandalism of the vehicle. There were 113 accused in the case including former MLA K K Narayanan. The court acquitted 110 of them. Among the accused, COT Naseer, a native of Thalassery, and Deepak, a native of Chalad, were expelled by the party.
