KOCHI: Climb to the terrace of Vytilla's Puliparambu house and you feel no different from the luscious greens of a farm. Here you will feel the aroma of mango trees, coconut, and bananas that have been here for a quarter of a century. The house situated on RSAC road is 500 square feet in area and is placed in three cent land. The farm comes under the tutelage of 73-year-old Saraswathy. 37 years back, it was her husband Parameshwaran who initiated growing snake gourd, tomato, red spinach, and banana in the topmost portion of their house. It was later that they extended their try to coconut and mango trees.
A biogas plant is also placed on the terrace. The rainwater will never get clogged as proper paths have been carved out particularly to meet this purpose. Parameshwarn died four years back. The baton was passed to Saraswathy to take good care of the farm. Interestingly, the house has no damages or leaks albeit having a farm on top for years. Saraswathy reasons it for more iron rods used during construction. The concrete works were also done with more cement than the needed amount. Saraswathy now lives with her son Shahul and his family.
