THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: 'Sundari Auto' scheme is being implemented by making auto drivers brand ambassadors to attract tourists. Autos in tourist centers will be modernized. The tourism department will select and train auto drivers on a district basis and then post them in tourism centers and cities. It is estimated that thousands of auto drivers will be benefitted from this project.
The scheme was implemented in Wayanad last year under the name of 'Tuk Tuk Tour' and after its success, it is being extended to the state level. Cooperation of labor and transport departments will also be sought. A meeting will be held soon under the chairmanship of the Ministers of Tourism, Transport and Labour.
Domestic tourism is targetted
The aim is to introduce tourists to local places in addition to the major tourist centers, thereby strengthening inland tourism. Auto rickshaws can help tourists in places where big vehicles don't go, can help them discover unknown tourist spots in rural areas, and bring tourists to major tourist centers smoothly.
Besides stimulating the local market, the tourism department also assesses that new market opportunities can be found in the field of tourism by taking the rurality of Kerala to an international level.

How to book?
The tourism department's website will include the name and phone number of the auto drivers, who can be contacted and the auto will arrive at the destination specified by the tourists. Bookings can also be made through tour operators, hotels, homestays, resorts and tourism guidance centers of local bodies. Information on tourism centers can be accessed by scanning the QR code printed on the auto. The autos will also feature the logo of the tourism department.
'Such an idea was shared in the Expert Workshop on Kerala's Design Policy Formulation. The plan will be given a final shape after the discussion conducted by including various departments.'
