GANDHINAGAR: Figures of missing women in Gujarat in five years are out. Official figures indicate that more than 40,000 women are missing. According to the National Crime Records Bureau, 7,105 women went missing in 2016, 7,712 in 2017, 9,246 in 2018 and 9,268 in 2019. In 2020, 8,290 women went missing from the state.

In 2021, the state government informed the assembly that 4,722 women went missing in Ahmedabad and Vadodara from 2019 to 2020. Sudhir Sinha, a former IPS officer and a member of the State Human Rights Commission, stated that some of the missing women are being trafficked into prostitution. He also suggested that the cases of missing women should be treated as more serious than murder and investigated.

At the same time, the Congress came out criticizing the BJP when the figures about the disappearance cases from Gujarat came out. Congress spokesperson Hiren Banker accused the BJP of talking about women in Kerala even though more than 40,000 women are missing from the Prime Minister's and Union Home Minister's state.
