3 lakh stray dogs, but only 32000 vaccinated

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Out of the more than three lakh stray dogs in the state, only ten percent have been vaccinated against rabies. A total of 32,061 stray dogs were vaccinated during the ten-month intensive vaccination campaign. Although there are more than 8 lakh pet dogs, only 4,38,473 have been vaccinated.

The animal protection department and the local bodies started the campaign ten months ago in September. Thiruvananthapuram is leading in this regard, having vaccinated 11,547 stray dogs. Wayanad is far behind with just six stray dogs vaccinated.

The scheme was not implemented in most of the panchayats due to a lack of dog catchers. As many as 170 hotspots of stray dog ​​infestation have been identified and vaccination has not been completed even there. Animal protection and local authorities stopped showing interest in this project with the decrease in stray dog ​​attacks and this became a backlash to the project.
