While it is a matter of pride that RCC is slowly becoming one of India’s most trusted hospitals, concerns also loom on the other side about the increasing number of cancer patients in Kerala. The average number of new patients admitted to RCC each year is 17,000. If detected earlier, cancer can be cured and this is arguably the greatest find of modern times. However, if diagnosed with cancer, it not only heaps trauma to the patient but the whole family gets devastated by the news.

In earlier times, if detected cancer, the patients' days were considered numbered. In contrast, RCC now is considered the best treatment center in the state which has instilled confidence that cancer is a curable disease.

Every year, lakhs of people even from outside Kerala reach RCC in the hope of curing the demon inside. A new 14-story building is coming up as part of the regional cancer center in the capital. With this, the total area of RCC will increase to seven lakh square feet. the new building promises technologically superior facilities and thus patients will no longer have to wait for surgery, radiation, and pathology results.

Swarming of patients and the dearth of top-notch technical equipment makes people wait anywhere near two months for surgery and radiation.

The new building will have six operation theaters and two radiation machines. With this, the waiting time for treatment can be reduced to just a few days, which offers big relief for cancer patients. Apart from this, the introduction of robotic surgery is also in the cards. Robotic Surgery can perform complex surgeries in a timely manner. When implemented, RCC will be the first hospital in India to introduce a robotic surgery system in the public sector.

As of now, one of the biggest burdens that fall on families in RCC is the prolonged wait for receiving pathology results. RCC Director Dr. Rekha A Nair said that the construction of the new building and the installation of better treatment equipment are in the final stage and promised that the patients will get benefits from the introduction.

Currently, the facility can accommodate 450 patients and will slowly increase to 700 with the arrival of the new building.
