Facebook chat, WhatsApp number exchange, and video; police warn middle-aged people in Kerala

KOLENCHERY: There is a factory-fresh heinous plot that is running rampant on social media these days, and the victims here are mostly middle-aged people. Police have now warned about a special gang that is simply targeting middle-aged people for money. Honey traps are a favorite among these gangs and they have the knack to easily inveigle middle-aged people into this crime. The gang is bolstering in confidence since they are pretty certain that the middle-aged people falling for the trap won't reveal any of this devious plot to the public or family in fear of humiliation. Now, police officials have asked these people to practice caution.

First, they will chat through a Facebook account that may seem legitimate. Later, the gang will befriend you and take all the information of family members through chatting. The bonhomie will soon result in the exchange of WhatsApp numbers. The next step is a video call and right after that starts the game of blackmail.

It is common for the gang to appear naked in the video call. If the victim cuts the call in shock, a voice message or a phone call will follow next. A screenshot of the video call will be sent to the WhatsApp account and blackmailing starts.

Some groups will video call and cut immediately. They will soon come up with a morphed photo of the video call and will make it that obscene to coerce the victim to give money. Many of those caught in the honeytrap are paying humungous money and getting away with it. Many have uninstalled Facebook and WhatsApp.

According to police, north Indians are the brains behind this devious plot.

  • Avoid taking video calls from unknown numbers
  • Do not open links in messages on the device itself
  • If you come across a video like this, learn to ignore it
  • Do not succumb to pressure from the gang
  • Make your Facebook friends list private
  • Don't give contact list and SMS permissions to anyone

File a complaint directly with the cyber cell or local police.
