ISLAMABAD: Nawas Sharif, former Pakistan Prime Minister and Pakistan Muslim League (PML) Nawas leader has won his seat in Lahore amid allegations of poll rigging. The poll rigging was levelled by Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) party. Election Commission of Pakistan announced that Sharif won with a majority of 55,000 votes.
In the election held in 265 seats, the information of the winners of 13 seats has been officially released so far. Five independent candidates who contested with the support of jailed former prime minister Imran Khan's party are among the successful candidates so far. The remaining four are PMLN party candidates.
There were claims that PTI independents are ahead in 47 seats and PML-N is leading in 44 seats. PTI members contested as independent candidates as the Election Commission denied them permission to contest with their own symbol, the cricket bat. Bilawal Bhutto Zardari's Pakistan People's Party (PPP) is also in the forefront. Elections were held for 266 seats in the 336-member National Assembly and four provincial assemblies. Absolute majority in the National Assembly is 169 seats.
