NEW DELHI: Despite the scorching heat, the water level in major dams in Kerala is better than last year, according to the Central Water Commission.
This is in the March 14 report on live water levels in 150 dams in the country. In 2023, monsoon was less in Kerala. In August, only 15% of rain was received. The northeast monsoon brought more rainfall. The improved status is due to well-planned utilization of water in the dams in anticipation of drought. Mullaperiyar had 28% water at this time last year. Currently it is 33 percent. Kerala receives 70 percent of its rainfall during the normal June-September monsoon. 20 percent during northeast monsoon in October-December. The remaining 10 percent comes from summer rains and others. Meanwhile, the water levels in dams in states like Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra and Rajasthan are lower than last year.
